Find shelters and bunkers in Germany

Schutzraum is the most comprehensive interactive map of all known shelters in Germany. Find bunkers, underground garages, subway stations and other protective spaces near you — with detailed information on location, capacity, condition, accessibility and equipment. Our goal is to make knowledge about civil protection in Germany accessible and to give citizens the opportunity to learn about protective options in their area.

What are shelters?

Shelters are structures that protect people from dangers such as air raids, natural disasters or chemical accidents. Germany has thousands of such spaces — from former World War II bunkers to underground garages with protective functions and subway stations. Many of these facilities were built or expanded during the Cold War and continue to provide protection to this day. Depending on their construction and condition, they vary considerably in their protective effect, capacity and accessibility.

How does the map work?

The map shows all recorded shelters with their exact location on an interactive map. You can filter by type (bunkers, underground garages, subway stations, tunnels), share your location to find the nearest shelters in your area, and view details like capacity, structural condition, protection level and wheelchair accessibility. Each entry contains all available information including photos, descriptions and entrances.

Bunkers

Former above-ground and underground bunkers from World War II and the Cold War. Many have been renovated and are usable as public shelters, some are now used as museums or cultural spaces.

Underground garages

Underground parking structures with additional protective function. Numerous underground garages in German cities were designed so they can serve as shelters for the population in an emergency.

Subway stations

Underground public transit stations offer natural protection through their massive construction and can accommodate a large number of people when needed.

History of shelters in Germany

The history of shelters in Germany dates back to World War I, when protective structures were first systematically built for the civilian population. During World War II, thousands of bunkers and shelters were constructed in all major cities. In the post-war period and during the Cold War, the network was further expanded — especially in West Germany, where many underground garages and subway stations were built with shelter functions. After the end of the Cold War, many facilities were decommissioned. Since 2022, the topic of civil protection has once again become a focus of public debate.

Contribute and report shelters

Our database thrives on community contributions. If you know a shelter that is not yet on the map, you can easily report it. Every contribution — whether new locations, corrections or photos — helps improve and keep up to date the overview of protective spaces in Germany. All reports are reviewed before publication.

Frequently asked questions about shelters

Are the shelters publicly accessible?
Not all shelters are accessible at all times. Some — like subway stations — are freely accessible during operating hours. Other shelters, especially former bunkers, are locked and only opened in emergencies. You can find detailed accessibility information in the detail view of each entry.
Where does the data on the map come from?
The data comes from a combination of publicly available sources, information from authorities such as the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), municipal administrations and community reports. All entries are carefully reviewed before appearing on the map.
Is this an official government website?
No. Schutzraum is an independent, volunteer-run open source project. All information about locations, capacities and conditions is provided without guarantee and may differ from actual circumstances. In an emergency, always follow the instructions of the responsible authorities and civil protection services.
How can I report a shelter or correct data?
You can report new shelters via the Submit function. If you want to correct an existing entry, you'll find a correction function on each detail page. No registration is required — you can also contribute as a guest.
Why is my city not yet on the map?
Our database is constantly growing. If your city or region is not yet represented, help us by reporting known shelters in your area. The more people contribute, the more complete the map becomes.
